Thermarest Z Lite Sol | Review

A carefully considered mat that can guarantee you a good night's sleep

To the untrained eye, the Z Lite Sol from Thermarest might look like something that lot at NASA would take on a mission into outer space. You might even give the product’s silver-side a quick glance and immediately convince yourself that Matthew McConaughey definitely used one at some point during the sci-fi epic Interstellar. You’d be wrong. The Thermarest Z Lite Sol, instead, is quite simply just a very good, very light, very compact camping mat.

Weighing in at just 410g, this ultralight foam mat is highly transportable and unlikely to ever weigh you down when you’re out on your adventures. Whether you take it into the woods or to the top of mountains, the Z Lite Sol is the kind of mat you can blissfully be unaware of while on your back until the time comes when you actually need to use it.

“One key aspect of this product you can’t help but notice are the innovative dimples which make it look completely unlike the standard camping mat”

Described on the Thermarest website as having an “accordion-style shape” when packed away, one key aspect of this product you can’t help but notice are the innovative dimples which make it look completely unlike the standard camping mat. The dimples aren’t just for aesthetics though, they actually help to shield from lumps and bumps while also trapping body heat to keep you warm.

While we’re on the subject of the ways in which this mat keeps the coldness of the ground away from you, a big shout out must go to the product’s reflective ThermaCapture™ coating. This coating helps to capture and reflect radiant heat, increasing overall warmth, they say, by almost 20 per cent.

Everything about this mat has been carefully considered so that the user gets maximum benefit from it. For example, the proprietary foam used is softer on top for extra comfort and denser underneath for extra durability; in turn leaving you with a mat that’s easy to sleep on without being easily destroyed by the rigours of camping.

Wherever you’re aiming to get to, and wherever you actually end up, you’re likely to get a good night’s sleep with the Thermarest Z Lite Sol strapped to your pack.

Tester’s Verdict

“Packed down, the Z Lite Sol reminds me of those super satisfying, looping, CGI animations you get in certain corners of the internet. You know the ones where everything falls so perfectly and rhythmically into place that you get a bit hypnotised.

“In addition to being nice to look at, the mat’s dimple construction means it’s also extremely comfortable. Picture the basic concept of a bed of nails and then swap in something much more squidgy, and enjoyable to sleep on, in place of the nails. That’s the Z Lite Sol in a nutshell.” – Jack Clayton, Editor of Mpora.
