Mammut T Advanced GTX Boot | First Look

Swiss brand Mammut is a class act, no question and that goes as much for it’s Raichle-powered footwear range as for the alpine-flavoured clothing collection and the new T Advanced GTX boot is no exception.

All-Round Walking Boot

At a time when a lot of brands seem to be focussing on ultra-lightweight, mininmalist footwear, it’s nice to see Mammut lavishing just as much attention on its more all-round walking and trekking boots like the T Advanced. Based on the existing T Aernergy model, it’s designed, says Mammut, for ‘summer walking across mixed terrain’.

To be honest, we’d happily use it in all conditions below the snowline and we’d look at it as an all-round hill and mountain-walking boot. And, it has to be said, a reasonably light one too at 1310g per pair of size 43s.

Hybrid Shell

Uppers are a mix of ‘velour leather’ and fabric and uses a concept Mammut calls ‘Hybrid Shell’ , we’re not entirely sure what that means, but the boot’s a brilliant fit for the typically-British OM test foot and instantly comfortable for us. That’s helped by the Memo Foam padding around the ankle, which softens and moulds to the shape your foot, but shouldn’t slop out with use.

The lacing system uses what Mammut calls Base Fit and means the lacing configuration uses extended attachment points to pull your foot down into the boot and hold it snugly in place. Also on the outside are patches of liquid rubber lightweight protection for the uppers and a proper rubber toe bumper, though the heel has to make do with just suede leather.

Cushioned Heel

Underfoot there’s plenty of EVA cushioning with a reassuring Vibram Scale outsole doing the grippy stuff. The mid-sole’s structured, it says here for ‘natural rolling, support and cushioning’ and there’s plenty of heel-to-toe flex – good for walking comfort – but little twist side to side, which tends to promote stability.

A quick stomp around gives an over-riding feel of a comfortable cushioned feel thanks to that EVA foam and they should work well on hard surfaces as well as softer terrain.

Nice Balance

Overall we’d say that they’re a modern, reasonably light, very comfortable, cushioned and supportive take on more traditional walking boots. If you’ve bought into the modern minimalist school of lightweight walking footwear, you’ll probably find them a little on the chunky side with their high, supportive ankle cuffs and generous underfoot cushioning, but if you’re  coming from a more traditional, stiff mountain boot, they’re a really nice balance.

Obviously comfort is dependent on fit, but if Mammut’s narrow-heeled, decently volumed forefoot lasting suits your foot, these promise to be a classy, comfortable all-round hill and mountain walking boot.

Price is £150 and they’re avaulable in both men’s and women’s versions. More information at
