Mammut Montana 3 Sleeping Bag | First Look

A quick early look at a new synthetic sleeping bag available from Mammut this summer.

The Mammut Montana 3 three-season synthetic sleeping bag won’t be available in the UK until early June, but we’ve got one in for a review and thought you might like a quick early look.

With Ajungilak Technology

Just as Mammut’s boots are powered by Raichle expertise, so their sleeping bag range has an Ajungilak badge on it.  And given that they’ve been making bags since 1855 and are particularly known for their synthetics – some of the best weve used – that’s got to be a good thing.

The basics are that it’s a three-season bag with a comfort-rating of +3˚C, a limit of comfort of -2˚C and an extreme rating – the lowest temperature you’ll survive at somewhat uncomfortably of -18˚C. Total weight of the bag with stuff sac is a real life 1490g of which 900g is Mammut’s own OTI Element filling. The outer fabric is called balanceTX and there’s a softer lining fabric dubbed softTX.

Seamless Construction

Construction is seamless which eliminates cold spots and gives better overall insulation. Other stuff worth knowing is that there’s an ergonomic box-foot with a whopping great Mammut mammoth logo printed on it. A long, two-way zip so you can vent your feet if you choose. And a water-resistant stuff bag with compression straps.

Ajungilak has always been good with synthetic bags, so we’re expecting decent performance here. Interestingly while lots of brands have poured development into down bags, synthetics – with a few exceptions from MHW for example – have stayed pretty much the same.

Knock-about Useability

That said, by synthetic standards, the Montana feels reasonably light for its rating. Packs down okay, but nothing like as small as an equivalent down bag and feels warm and well made. The big plus is that synthetics retain more heat when damp and are easy to wash – you can simply chuck the Montana into a machine at 60˚C to freshen things up when needed – don’t try that with a down bag.

Along with two and three-season equivalents, the Montana 3 is going to be available exclusively from Go Outdoors from early June, we’ll bring you a full review before then.
