Mammut Rime Pro Hooded Jacket | Review

The Swiss brand's sleekly-cut, Primaloft-filled insulated jacket makes an excellent winter all-rounder for the slim at heart.

‘Top-notch Pertex fabrics and PrimaLoft insulation in a sleekly-cut slickly designed jacket for all-round outdoors use. You may need to go up a size with the Rime Pro though.’

Outdoors Magic: Cleverly zoned PrimaLoft fill and Pertex outer fabrics, seam-free shoulders, decent helmet hood, snuggly fleece-lined pockets, glove-friendly zip-pulls, reasonable water resistance.

Outdoors Tragic: A little weighty for its warmth value, very slim cut, ‘just’ Silver level fill.

Outdoors Grabbit? Mammut’s uncompromising ‘Absolute alpine’ label translates to a super sleek, close-fitting, PrimaLoft jacket. It’s not a forgiving cut and you may need to go up a size if you want to use it for over-layering, but the quality is hard to fault and while it’s medium rather than super warm, its damp-friendly nature make it a capable all-round insulation mate. Slightly weighty.

Mammut Rime Pro Hooded Jacket | Fill

The Rime Pro uses two grades of PrimaLoft’s Silver insulation fill which have been cunningly zoned to keep movement relatively restriction free.

There’s an 80gsm version on the sides of the trunk and inside of the sleeves and a heavier, slightly bulkier 100gsm fill elsewhere. The idea is to stop you having to walk like Arnie by reducing bulk between arms and body.

‘In other words, Silver fill is cheaper and  not quite as thermally effective. ‘But still very good’ says PrimaLoft.’

The Silver level of PrimaLoft is the slightly less thermally efficient version of the brand’s market-leading synthetic fill.

It has similar anti-damp resilience to the premier Gold version of the insulation, but its warmth to weight ratio is lower.

In other words, it’s cheaper and  not quite as effective. ‘But still very good’ says PrimaLoft. The ability to maintain its effectiveness even when damp makes it an ideal knock-about fill for use in cold, dank, UK conditions.

Mammut Rime Pro Hooded Jacket | Performance

Swiss brand Mammut’s alpine background – its tagline is ‘Absolute alpine’ – means that it knows a thing or two about creating serious technical clothing. In the case of the Rime Pro that means some neat detailing and effective features.

In particular there are two grades of Pertex fabric used, the majority of the jacket is Pertex Microlight, but the shoulders and outsides of the sleeves use tougher, more water resistant, Pertex Endurance material. The idea is that it can take a little more abrasion from pack-straps or rock.

Stitch-free Shoulders

The shoulders are free of stitching too which removes a potential weak point. Other stuff we like includes the multiple pockets including two huge internal stretch mesh ones which can use to stash gloves, hat, or even a water bottle close to the body.

What were were a little surprised by is the super sleek fit. It’s Mammut’s ‘regular’ cut, but it’s very close fitting, particularly in the chest and torso,  and if you want to layer the jacket over a shell or soft shell, you may even need to go up a size. If you’re carrying a little excess ballast, you should probably look elsewhere.

The sleeves are a close fit too, though to be fair, the cut doesn’t noticeably interfere with movement and we were happy using it from scrambling-type moves on a cold day.

Medium Warmth

The jacket’s a medium sort of warmth affair for its 560g-odd weight. Some of that, we suspect, is down to ample quilting with lots of stitch lines and some the Silver rather than Gold insulation, but it’s a good all-rounder for anything from stops on hillwalking outings through to low-tempo active use.

You could, for example, ice climb in it helped by the hood working well with a helmet as well as a bare head. It adjusts down neatly enough and moves with your direction of gaze while covering neck and chin. The PrimaLoft fill should handle the odd drip quite happily too.

Mammut Rime Pro Hooded Jacket | Verdict

It’s nicely made and detailed with good quality components and thoughtful design touches. The hood works well both with and without a helmet, the Pertex fabrics are windproof and cleverly zoned for improved durability in key areas and the PrimaLoft fill – also neatly zoned – does its usual, dependable, damp-friendly gig.

The one major quibble we have is with the super-snug fit. It’s close to being restrictive, for us at least, and while that means it sits neatly under a technical shell if necessary, it also makes it intolerant of more generously constructed users and problematic in ‘throw it over the top of everything’ belay jacket use.

In other words, the Rime Pro favours the slim. If that’s you, it makes a very capable, all-round, medium-warm outdoors companion for anything from climbing to chilling.
