Coleman Biker Sleeping Bag | Review

After a summer of usage, what did we make of the two season Coleman Biker sleeping bag?

I’ve got a lot of use out of the Coleman Biker sleeping bag this year. And by “a lot”, I mean A LOT. I’ve used it on a colder than expected April camping trip to Snowdonia, I’ve used it on a trekking expedition in the mountains of Morocco, I’ve used it at music festival Secret Garden Party – where I managed to completely avoid spilling vodka and/or beer on it – and I’ve used it on a ‘champing’ (camping in a church) night in Kent. All very different scenarios in which to use a sleeping bag, all tests that the Biker passed.

The Biker, as the name openly suggests, has been designed in such a way that it can be packed up and kept in the small storage space you get on motorbikes and bike-packing trips. Now, I’m not much of a motorcyclist but I did find the sheer ‘pack-up-ability’ of this sleeping  bag a real plus point. Stuff it in the Biker’s weatherproof ‘Dry Gear Bag’ any which way you like, and you’ll be impressed by just how compact this thing can get. I don’t like to brag but, while we’re on this subject, my friend at Secret Garden Party openly complimented me on how small my sleeping bag looked when it was packed away. #WinningAtLife

“…a really nice summer sleeping bag; one that’ll do a job for you without emptying your bank balance.”

If you’re worried that its compact size means it’s poorly insulated, or that it doesn’t have the tech required to keep you from freezing solid, you needn’t be. The Biker is efficiently insulated with Coletherm® Microfiber synthetic insulation. What is this exactly? Well, in a nutshell, it’s an insulation that’s light and compressible. It’s got a decent heat to weight ratio, one that we noticed – and appreciated – on our very first use. The fact that it’s a bonded insulation means the fibres stay exactly where you want them, eliminating cold spots as a result. It’s nothing spectacular, but we found the Biker to be usable and effective in a variety of situations.

With a temperature range that only goes down to the -2°C mark, the Coleman Biker is by no means a sleeping bag suitable for Arctic expeditions. However, when combined with a thermal base layer, a wooly hat and a sleeping mat, we found its offering to be a pleasantly cosy one even when things got a bit chilly outside.

The inner pocket designed for storing valuables, while not exactly a mind-blowing feature, is the kind of sleeping bag addition that’s always appreciated. Especially when bivvy bagging in Snowdonia, or using the bag at a music festival – a place, where let’s face it, alcohol-induced blurs make it difficult to keep track of your possessions.

Coleman Biker Sleeping Bag: Verdict

In conclusion, the Coleman Biker is a really nice summer sleeping bag; one that’ll do a job for you without emptying your bank balance. We’ve used it on a number of different camping trips during the last four months and the product hasn’t let us down. Throw in the ease of pack-down, and the practical benefits this brings, and we reckon you’ll get good usage out of this.
