Asolo’s New Elbrus GV Winter Boot With Added ‘DIS’

New Asolo Elbrus GV alpine mountaineering boot comes complete with new light outsole technology.

Italian boot maestro Asolo has a new lightweight alpine boot for this winter, the Elbrus GV complete with a novel sole technology which they’re calling DIS.

It stands for ‘Dual Integrated System’ and is – it says here – a clever integrated combination of ‘two layers of modern materials expertly combined to achieve a high level of cushioning,
durability and support at a reduced weight’. Here’s how it works in diagrammatic splendour:

Sole geeks pay attention! This is how Asolo DIS works with a mix of high and low density TPU combined with a double density rubber mid-sole. ‘Cushioning, durability and support at a reduced weight’ says Asolo.

The outcome is a boot that’s compatible with semi-automatic crampons using a heel clip and weighs a claimed 800g for a single size 42 (UK8) boot. That comes it at 1600g per pair, which is pretty decent for a full-on alpine boot.

Suede, Gore-Tex and Soft Shell…

Other stuff includes uppers using water resistant suede (1.6mm-1.8mm) and lined with Gore-Tex® Performance for waterproofing. Ankle cuff made from high-spec Schoeller-branded soft shell fabric as is the tongue to give a comfortable debris-resistant fit.

Also on the fit from, the lacing extends low down towards to the toe to help with precision. There’s a full rubber rand and toe-cap to ward off shark-like rock abrasion incidents too.

Finally, underfoot there’s a chunky Asolo/Vibram Ascent®outsole designed to give good grip on looser terrain and particularly help with braking when descending on rough paths with heavy packs.

As ever with boots, fit is crucial, but we’ve always had a soft spot for the Asolo last where the medium broad, medium volume editorial foot is concerned and we reckon they should suit a good few ‘typically British’ feet.
