Kids Walking Boots | 6 of the Best For 2016/17

We take a look at six of the best walking boots for children in all colours, shapes and sizes.

Kid’s walking boots used to be a dodgy affair, they were little more than a pair of upgraded wellies – and in turn, fairly unsafe. In today’s age, the boots are essentially miniature versions of the adult models with the same, or similar, fabrics and technologies.

This means more safety for the kids and less worrying for the parents. But which brands do you go for? Which are the best value for money? We’ve taken a look at six on the market to give you an idea of what’s out there. If you need any further help about what to look for in a boot then check out our walking boots buyer’s guide with tips and advice before purchasing.

Regatta Holcombe Mid Junior Walking Boot

Regatta’s premier junior walking boot has all the features of a full adult model, but is simply smaller. The shoe goes in tandem with the brand’s kids waterproof jackets, which are as stylish if not more so.

The Hydropel upper material is great for dispersing water and mud so the boots don’t get weighed down on long walks.

For the protection of the kid’s ankles, there’s also deep padding around the tongue and a mid-cut collar which will prevent the ankle rolling.

There’s no doubt £70 is expensive for a kid’s shoe, especially considering they’ll be wearing them for a year (max), but currently retailing around the £30 mark, it’s good value for that price.

Merrell Kid’s Reflex Mid Waterproof Boots

Very slick-looking girl’s walking boot from the American brand as part of its new kids hiking footwear series.

The Merrell Reflex boots are all about the suede upper featuring M-Select DRY technology which combines breathability, waterproofness and comfort all in one. A fabric also used in the brand’s latest trail running shoe – the All Out Charge.

Importantly too, the midsole has a very supportive construction to protect the child’s ankles and legs on tricky terrain, while the lacing system is neat and simple.

The splashes of vibrant colour around the suave suede makes it one of the best looking boots on the list – we’re sure any young female adventurer would be proud to wear them.

Regatta Hypertrail Low Junior Shoe

Designed for those fast hikers, the Regatta Hypertrail is almost a trail running shoe but is generally used for summer hiking.

The shoes are all about comfort. The EVA footbed, which is also used in Regatta’s Garsdale walking boots, moulds to the user’s foot while there is a slip resistant sole for constant stability on the trails.

And as we know, kids will kick or knock into anything when out and about so having the abrasion resistant toe and heel bumpers really improves the durability of the shoe.

And best still, they look awesome with the yellow band around the top of the sole and the black and blue upper looks very flash.

KEEN Big Kid’s Chandler CNX Walking Shoe

A mesh outdoor sports shoe designed for wearing near water, the KEEN Chandler CNX is reminiscent of the American brand’s adult CNX shoes.

It’s the combination of the light, breathable mesh upper and the stiff rubber outsole, which is also used on KEEN’s CNX sandals, that makes it great for multiple outdoor activities.

If the kids are playing around in water then the Chandler’s have very good quick-drying capabilities so they won’t be puddles all over the house after the day’s adventure.

On top of that, the soles have been purposely made to not mark any surface so home and shop floors are safe. These small details make this shoes a very decent option for an outdoors kid.

Salomon Kids XA Pro 3D Mid CSWP Boot

The French brand known for producing some of the world’s top running gear has recreated its popular Pro 3D boot in kids form.

Like its daddy, the kid’s version has a Climashield waterproof bootie construction so feet don’t get wet in rough conditions, while the Sesifit system is designed to cradle the foot for a more secure fit.

With a lot of kid’s walking boots, the Pro 3D has a mid cut for additional ankle support and protection and the Quick Fit lacing system makes it a lot easier to get on and off – a feature similar to that found on the Salomon Wings Pro 2 trail shoe.

There’s also a protective heel cap to avoid any unnecessary accidents and the non-marking Contagrip outsoles mean there won’t be any unwanted marks if brought indoors.

Jack Wolfskin Kids Crosswind WT Texapore Mid Boot

Specifically built for winter excursions, the German brand’s Crosswind WT Texapore will keep kid’s feet warm and dry during hours of cold activity.

Jack Wolfsin – a brand known for its eco-friendly products – uses a PU-coated leather upper on the boots to make them extra robust, while the lightweight synthetic insulation keeps feet warm in cold conditions.

There are a bunch of practical features for kids too including reflective detailing all around for extra visibility, while the rapid lacing system has been cleverly designed to be easily used with gloves.

And most importantly, they look darn cool. The reflective panels have given them a unique Jack Wolfskin sort of feel that the kid’s can shoe off to their mates.
